A Cosy Start at School Farm House

First stop – where I laid my head for the weekend – was the ever-so-charming School Farm House. Nestled in the countryside, this farmhouse is the epitome of comfort. Think beamed ceilings, and plenty of cosy corners to curl up in with a good book. The warmth of the cottage paired with the peace of the surrounding fields made for the perfect winter retreat.

Orford: A Seaside Gem with Warmth in Every Bite

On day one, I headed to Orford, a village that feels like a hidden gem on the Suffolk coast. The first thing that beckoned me was Pump Street Bakery – trust me, you need to try their sourdough and pastries. The smell of freshly baked bread will have you swooning before you even step inside. You also need to check out their famous chocolate shop just across the street.

After fueling up, I wandered down to the river for a peaceful walk, taking in the wintery landscape – crisp air, beautiful views, and only the sound of my boots (and wind) crunching on the gravel. Orford Castle was another highlight. It’s a fascinating, historic site with views of the surrounding marshes, and though a bit chilly, the sight of it against the winter sky was magical.

For lunch, I treated myself to a seafood feast at the iconic Pinney’s Seafood Restaurant. The fresh, local oysters are a must-try (yes, even in winter!), and everything on the menu was top-notch. A true taste of East Suffolk’s coastal charm.

Woodbridge: Boutique Shops and Cosy Cafes

Next on my itinerary was Woodbridge, a delightful market town with boutique shops, cobbled streets, and cosy cafés. My first stop? Harvey & Honey, a little coffee shop serving up the best coffee in town. I spent a good while sipping on my coffee and browsing the local shops, picking up some unique finds from the independent stores – think hand-poured candles, artisanal pottery, and some unique brands.

Later in the day, I wandered down to Tide Mill – another must-visit and only 1 of 2 remaining tide mills in the country. After a few hours of meandering, it was clear that Woodbridge is the sort of town you want to stay in for the day, popping in and out of its little shops, grabbing a bite, and soaking up its relaxed atmosphere.

Southwold: Beachy Breezes and Tasty Treats

On day two, it was time for Southwold – home to the famous beach huts and the iconic pier. A stroll along the beach in winter is something else. The fresh sea air, the sound of the waves crashing, and the light mist rolling in made for a wonderfully atmospheric walk.

Of course, no visit to Southwold is complete without a stop at Two Magpies Bakery. Whether you’re in the mood for a gingerbread biscuit, a warm pastry, or something a little more indulgent, this bakery never disappoints. With a treat in hand, I continued my walk to the pier – the perfect spot for a photo op or simply soaking in the peaceful wintery views. Plus Im not going to lie, I love a good old seaside arcade.

Aldeburgh: Seaside Charm with a Touch of Elegance

Next up: Aldeburgh, a town famous for its artsy vibe and beautiful coastal scenery.

Strolling around the town, you’ll find plenty of art galleries, boutique shops, and, of course, the scenic beachfront. It's a town that feels both luxurious and relaxed at the same time. Whether you're a foodie, an art lover, or just someone who enjoys coastal charm, Aldeburgh delivers it all and you absolutely cannot miss dining at The Suffolk.

Dinner at The Suffolk: A Feast for the Senses

After a day of exploring, I was ready for a special lunch at The Suffolk. As soon as I entered, I was impressed by the chic, contemporary décor – sleek, modern, and stylish. The atmosphere was relaxed yet sophisticated, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventures. The food was divine. I had the pork chop, which was tender and perfectly cooked. The shared beef rib was a stand-out, and the sticky toffee pudding? Absolute heaven! If you find yourself in East Suffolk, make sure to get a reservation here. It’s an experience worth savouring. Plus in the summer months they have a beautiful roof terrace that overlooks the sea front and is perfect for a cocktail

Thorpness: A Picturesque Mere and Tranquil Vibes

The next day I ventured to Thorpness, a small village with a big heart. The highlight here was the Thorpness Mere – a peaceful lake surrounded by pretty cottages and tranquil gardens. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy nature, especially when the sun peeks through the winter clouds. I spent a few hours wandering along the paths, taking photos, and enjoying the serenity of this tucked-away village.

The Unruly Pig: A Pub with Personality

One other place for the foodies that you cannot miss and has recently been awared Number 1 Gastro pub award is The Unruly Pig, a warm and welcoming pub that perfectly captures the essence of Suffolk’s laid-back charm. The menu is full of hearty, comforting dishes with a modern twist, and the staff is incredibly friendly. It’s the perfect spot to relax and reflect on an amazing staycation. I wouldn’t go to Suffolk without booking a table here…. it is that good!

Whether you’re in the mood for a cosy getaway or an adventurous trip exploring coastal towns and rural villages, East Suffolk delivers. The combination of beautiful seaside views, charming towns, and delicious food makes it a perfect destination for any time of year. Winter here is particularly magical, with crisp air, empty beaches, and warm, inviting pubs waiting to welcome you in.

So, pack your bags (or don’t – you’ll be so comfortable in the charming spots here, you may never want to leave!) and head to East Suffolk for your next staycation. It’s a place that promises relaxation, great food, and a genuine local charm, no matter what time of year it is.
