The ultimate UK road trip is waiting for you. The one and only NC 500 with roadsurfer.

Gruinard Bay view point with our Road House roadsurfer campervan

Picture this: the sun peeking over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the rolling hills and Munros of the Scottish Highlands. The air is crisp, the scent of pine trees mingling with the salty tang of the sea. And there, parked at the edge of a cliff (quite literally on several occasions) is your trusty roadsurfer campervan, ready to whisk you away on the adventure of a lifetime. After months of dreaming and planning, you're finally embarking on your dream UK staycation: a road trip through Scotland, with the iconic North Coast 500 (NC 500) route as your ultimate journey. So grab your map, crank up the tunes, and get ready to experience the magic of Scotland like never before. This is the road trip you've been waiting for, and it's about to be epic.

This was an unforgettable journey through the rugged landscapes and picturesque villages of Scotland’s NC 500 route. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a novice adventurer, there’s no better way to experience the beauty of this region than from the comfort of a campervan. With its winding roads, breathtaking vistas, and rich cultural heritage, the NC 500 promises an immersive exploration of Scotland's wild, but pretty magical north.

We completed our journey in April 2024. A brilliant time of year to do the route as it’s early on in the season, so the roads and campsites are much quieter than in the summer and you also avoid those pesky midges that Scotland is famous for. However, we wouldn’t let that put us off doing this trip in high season, because the beauty of this place will make you forget about everything and give you the chance to just live in the moment in awe-inspiring scenery.

Why choose a campervan?

Travelling the NC 500 in a campervan offers unparalleled freedom and flexibility. Imagine waking up to the sound of waves crashing against the shore, brewing a fresh cup of coffee as you watch the sunrise over the rugged cliffs, and setting off on the open road whenever the mood strikes. With a campervan, every bend in the road becomes an opportunity for adventure, and every stopover offers a chance to connect with nature and the super friendly locals.

The NC 500 is made for campervans and motorhomes. Driving is relatively easy with all the passing places. Parking at all the beauty spots is trouble free and we loved all the purpose built viewing points where you could pull up your van and swing open the back doors to enjoy a coffee with the most unreal views straight from your bed.

We chose the Road House which can actually sleep 4 people with the pop-up roof. We loved several things about this van. It was super spacious, the bed stayed permanently set up (my fave thing about the campervan), good size kitchen and fridge (very important), lots of storage (you can stand up in the van - my husband is 6ft and there was plenty of space still left above him), full bathroom facilities inside the van. Plus, I think we just looked supercool cruising around in this van, lol! We actually got lots of comments and compliments from other fellow adventurers.

 The Route

The NC 500, often dubbed Scotland’s answer to America’s iconic Route 66, spans approximately 500 miles of stunning coastline, winding through the Scottish Highlands. A route where dramatic peaks and mist-shrouded valleys create a landscape straight out of a fantasy film. Hike along winding trails and immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of this iconic Scottish destination.

Starting and ending in Inverness, this circular route takes travellers through some of the most breathtaking scenery Scotland has to offer. Trust us, the only thing you will regret about booking this trip is the fact that you didn’t go for longer as every single twist and turn in the road reveals another unbelievable view.

As we picked up our roadsurfer van from the Manchester station we first headed for the majestic Glen Coe for our first night’s stop. The next day we then made our way to Loch Ness, the legendary home of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. Here, you can cruise along the dark waters of the loch, keeping your eyes peeled for signs of the elusive creature, and explore charming villages nestled along the shoreline.

The majestic Glen Coe

Continue your journey to Dornoch, a historic town with a rich heritage and stunning natural surroundings. We loved the beach here and you have to grab a breakfast bagel and coffee from Highland Larder. Here, you can visit Dunrobin Castle, a majestic fairytale fortress overlooking the sea, and marvel at its turrets, towers, and manicured gardens. Nearby, Big Burn Falls offers a tranquil escape into nature, where you can wander through ancient woodlands and listen to the soothing sounds of cascading water.

As you travel through Dunbeath and Caithness, you'll encounter rugged coastlines, ancient ruins, and windswept landscapes. Explore the quaint village of Dunbeath, known for its literary connections and picturesque harbour, before venturing further north to Caithness. Here, you can discover hidden gems like John o' Groats, the northernmost point of the UK, where you can snap a selfie at the iconic signpost marking the end of the road.

John o’ Groats

As you journey across the north coast heading west, enjoy stopping off at some of the iconic beaches on this coastline which include Torrisdale Bay and Farr Bay, to name a few. One of our favourite stops was the village of Tongue, you'll be captivated by its scenic beauty and historic charm. Explore the ruins of Castle Varrich, perched high on a hill overlooking the Kyle of Tongue, and imagine the stories of centuries past. There is also a great café called Norse Bakehouse which is a must visit and enjoy a romantic dinner at the Tongue Hotel.

Continue your adventure to Durness, a remote corner of Scotland known for its breathtaking beaches and natural wonders. Explore the mystical depths of Smoo Cave, where underground waterfalls and eerie chambers await, and feel like an intrepid explorer as you uncover its secrets. Nearby, Sango Sands Beach offers a perfect spot for relaxation, with soft sands and stunning sea views stretching as far as the eye can see. There is also one of the best campsites for front row sea views called Sango Sands Oasis. Request a front row pitch or the VIP pitches 65, 66, 67 for the most amazing views of the bay.

Standing just a few metres from the powerful force of Clashnessie (yes, I did get soaked!)

Further along the route, you'll encounter Balnakeil Beach, a hidden gem with pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters. Take a leisurely stroll along the shore, collecting seashells and soaking up the tranquility of this coastal paradise. Then, venture to Scourie, a tranquil village nestled between mountains and sea, where you can cast a line and try your luck at fishing in the crystal-clear waters of Loch Laxford. From Scourie we would recommend fitting in a visit to the famous and pretty dramatic Wailing Widow Falls. A short, but tricky walk to an epic waterfall.

Continue your journey to Clachtoll, where you'll discover another stunning beach with soft sands and turquoise waters. Take a dip in the refreshing waters of the Atlantic Ocean and explore the nearby ruins of Ardvreck Castle, perched on the shores of Loch Assynt. Then, make your way to Achmelvich Bay, where you can relax on the pristine sands and soak up the stunning views of the Assynt mountains. Achmelvich & Vestey’s beach was, without a doubt, our favourite beach on the whole NC500 route. The whitest sand and most turquoise, clear waters you could dream of. Don’t leave here without taking a dip in the refreshing Atlantic.

Looking across to the Torridon Hills at one of the many view points on the NC500

As you approach Ullapool, you'll be greeted by a vibrant fishing port with a lively arts scene and a bustling waterfront. Our stop here was short but sweet, stumbling across the amazing Seafood Shack for the freshest langoustines. Finally, journey to Gairloch, where you'll find another stunning beach with panoramic views of the Torridon Hills and the Isle of Skye across the water.

End your adventure in Shieldaig and Applecross, where you can take the winding road over the Bealach na Ba pass and enjoy breathtaking views of the Applecross peninsula. Explore the picturesque village of Shieldaig, with its charming harbour and tranquil atmosphere, before treating yourself to a delicious meal at the local pub and raising a glass to the beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
