Dartmoor Delights: Roaming Free on a Moor-tastic Staycation

After a charming and whimsical staycation in one of our many beautiful National Parks, Dartmoor is one of those not to be missed. Often not given the credit or limelight it deserves as so many pass it by to get down to Cornwall. (We have been guilty of this many times) But, finally we made the stop, and although some mixed weather, it did not disappoint, and really got us thinking… why have we not been before??

Nestled amidst the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park, Millend Hotel is full of charm and tranquility. Surrounded by rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and babbling streams, this historic hotel offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Whether indulging in a sumptuous meal crafted from locally sourced ingredients in the elegant dining room or unwinding by the crackling fireplace in one of the snug lounges, guests are transported to a world of relaxation and serenity. Each room exudes comfort and style, providing a peaceful sanctuary after a day of exploration in the wilds of Dartmoor. From leisurely strolls to exhilarating hikes, Millend Hotel serves as the perfect basecamp for adventurers eager to discover the untamed beauty of this captivating landscape. And within walking distance to both Chagford village and the stunning Teign Valley, think of this place a bit like a ski in-ski out but rather a walk in -walk out kinda place.

So are you ready to embark on a wild journey through Dartmoor National Park? Buckle up because we're about to dive headfirst into a staycation filled with laughs, sights, and maybe a few unexpected encounters with those infamous Dartmoor ponies.

First stop: Teign Valley. Picture this: lush greenery, meandering rivers, and a tranquility that'll make you forget all about your weekday woes. We recommend walking the higher path one way past Castle Droggo and then the lower riverside path back to make it a circular route.

Now, onto Hay Tor – the crown jewel of Dartmoor's skyline. Get ready to feel on top of the world as you conquer this iconic granite peak. Pro tip: Catch this place at either sunrise or sunset for a truly magical experience.

Feeling peckish after all that hiking? Swing by Chagford for a taste of small-town charm and a hearty meal at the Chagford Inn. Trust us, the food is really goof here.

But wait, there's more! Don't miss the chance to hop over to Lustleigh and explore the mystical wonders of Wistman's Wood. With its ancient twisted trees and eerie atmosphere, you'll half expect to stumble upon a coven of witches brewing up some potions.

Now, if you're into history (or just really cool castles), Castle Drogo is calling your name. Channel your inner knight or damsel as you roam the halls of this imposing fortress. Just be sure to watch out for ghostly encounters – we hear the spirits here are quite the chatty bunch.

And finally, let's talk about Dartmoor's most famous residents: the wild ponies. These adorable, shaggy creatures are practically the park's unofficial mascots, and spotting them grazing freely among the heather is a sight you won't soon forget. Just remember, no matter how cute they look, resist the urge to give them a hug – they're wild, after all!

So there you have it, folks – a whirlwind tour of Dartmoor National Park that's equal parts fun, funny, and downright fabulous. Whether you're scaling peaks, exploring woodlands, or simply soaking in the scenery, Dartmoor is guaranteed to steal a piece of your heart – and leave you planning your next staycation before you've even checked out of your cozy B&B. Happy trails!
